Change motors Hubsan X4 Desire H502E and H502S

In this post I want to show you how to change the motors of a H502E and H502S

It’s not hard to do, but involves soldering!

Motors can be bought here.
These are CCW motors, you’ll need 2
These are CW motors, you also need 2
And since you have it all apart it’s advisable to change the gearing as well, they’re cheap to replace, and just slide over the shaft. here are gears that you’ll need

A complete change of motors and gears will cost you no more than €15,-

I have been asked a few time if this drone can be upgraded to brushless motors.
There is only 1 right answer… NO!
There is no room to fit a different board, ESC’s and the bigger brushless motors.
If you want to upgrade your H502, take the H501 instead. this one has brushless motors

Back to the repair,
First you need to remove the propellers, if you have them on.

After that you need to put the drone on it’s back and remove the “landing gear” by removing 2 screws.

Remove the landing gear, under it you see another screw that needs to be removed as well.

Once this is removed you need to remove the other 2 screws from the arm

Do this with all four arms.
When all screws are out you can separate the top from the bottom half.
Be careful though, the GPS antenna and Compass are still attached to the board, gently unclip them.

When you have unclipped the antenna’s you can take away the top cover completely.
Now you have full access to it’s internals

The motor mounts just pop out, they are not clipped in.

Now you can desolder the wires to remove the motors from the board.

Now you can remove the motors from the mounts. These are clipped in the mount, be careful when removing them.
Take note of the way the wires are routed through the mount!

Since you have the motors out it might be good to lube the bearings while you’re at it.
I am using sewing machine oil.

Now that the motors are removed it is time to install the new motors in the mounts.
This is basically the reverse of what you have just done, motor slides in, and clips in it’s place.
Rout the wires in the mounts and make sure that everything is seated properly.

Now solder the motors back on the board, make sure you have a good connection.
Front has 1 CW and 1 CCW motor, rear has 1 CW and 1 CCW motor.
CCW motor is on the front left, and rear right.
CW motor is on the front right, and rear left!
Please make sure you put them in the correct way, otherwise it will NOT fly

When everything is back in place it is time to put back the top cover.
Just don’t screw it back together yet!
I think it is better to leave it open just now to do a quick check to see if everything is working.

Connect a battery, and do a little test to see if all motors are spinning, and in the correct direction!
This involves calibration, do this carefully as the drone is not in 1 piece yet. after calibration you can just arm the motors, no need for a GPS signal or lock. The top half needs to be connected to the board though!

When you are satisfied with the results, put the drone back together.
Watch out that cables don’t get stuck!

When everything is back together, put a battery in, leave the propellers off and start the drone.let the new motors break in, Just leave them running without propellers for a few minutes.

If you are looking for other parts for the H502E/S you can have a look here

Happy flying!

  1. After replacing two motors on my hubsan h502s one of the motors spins when the battery is connected . any idea’s on what i have done wrong?
    Thanks Peter

  2. When you attach the props, do all the props screw down CW, or do you tighten 2 CW and the other 2 CCW?? Manual is not very helpful, props have arrows on them, but it looks like the direction of rotation.

  3. Well the Apex RC Products CL-0820 Traxxas Alias motors burned up on second flight. 3 of the 4. I dont understand! Maybe 5 minutes of flight time on them. I think the 2 cell is to much for these motors. Or I am having bad luck. Everything was and still is spinning freely. Thinking if I am wasting my time with this drone and maybe buy something else for my son, again.

  4. hi i have the 502s i just got it last week so i hope its the upgraded version . I did notice that it had bearings so i think its the upgraded and i also got a sun shield for radio that came with it. I did a break in with my motors so to seat the comms and oiled the bearings and so far ive had about 15 flights and its still purring like a kitten lol it runs great but i would like to do firmware upgrade but after hearing the stories im not sure but if i do have the upgraded version then it should work OK right ?, and how do i tell if i have the compatible board for upgraded firmware thank you and please help if you can, and from what you said about firmware that its a good one and fixes a few things then i sure could use it

    1. Hi John,
Unfortunately there is no real way of telling if your 502 is compatible or not.

I think it is just a way of trying and finding out. I have had someone asking me how to revert it because he bricked it. reverting to an old firmware seems possible though.

But I also think, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it!

  5. The old version is better, the new one was done to cut production costs and nothing more. They all have bearings, the new model only has plastic ones. I have the new version, the firmware upgrade broke it.

  6. Alguem pode me ajudar? comprei um drone faz poucos dias e um dos motores esta travando na hora que liga, parece barulho da engrenagem raspando em algum lugar. o que devo fazer?

  7. Hi, I’m having a problem with one of my motors. (Rear right) keeps burning out. And I mean it stinks of burning then stops spinning and goes really stiff. This has happened with two motors and they last from 30 seconds – 1min before doing so.
    Any thoughts?

  8. I’ve changed the motors 4 times now and always the same one that burns out within 1min of flying every time. Must be a problem with the board or something? Can’t just be bad motors every time?

    1. See if you can add yourself to a Hubsan group on Facebook. Ask Shally Liu for help, she is a Hubsan representative and can arrange a replacement board.

  9. Hey,
is there any trick to remove the screws from the props? I cannot remove them as they sit too tight. I do not remember putting them in so tight. However, I am worried to wear out the screws and being stuck with the props forever

    1. You need a decent (precision) screwdriver that fits correctly. There is no other way.
Make sure you are turning them in the correct direction of course! Precision screwdriver set with rubber handles.

  10. Please help ! I have replaced two motors on my hubsan 502s, and now it suddenly without warning completely looses all power while in flight. Seems to fly normally up to that point, time of flight doesn’t seem to matter ie: 1 minute 2 min etc. Any help will be appreciated,

  11. I would appreciate help with this same issue please. My battery goes completely dead and recovers in a few minutes of rest. Otherwise flies great then drops out of air due to dead battery (or so it is indicated on tx). I have replaced motors, and have had this problem after doing so. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Doug

      1. Thanks for replying. I did not mention, I have tried 3 different batteries, same result.i am wondering if a ccw is used in cw position and reversed wires could cause this because that is what I did because I didn’t have a ccw at the time.
        Thanks again Doug

  12. Hi and thanks for these instructions. I bought the Hubsan H216A model. I need to order 4 spare motors. The entire internet says no mention of motors for the h216a. Possibly because the model is new. I am not sure which ones and where to buy. Can you help me out. Prefer Amazon. Thanks. I really appreciate it. New to drones.
